Syed Zahid Ahmad is an economist and senior practitioner of ethical,
participatory finance, committed to benefiting society through
innovative and ethically grounded financial solutions that strengthen
livelihoods and promote real-sector economic activity. He is among the
few professionals in India consistently advancing Participatory Finance
as a practical solution to structural economic challenges. He has
conceptualized and promoted innovative financial products such as
Micro Equity and Joint Asset Lease, aimed at strengthening microenterprises and offering affordable housing finance solutions.
Academically, in 1986 he secured the best result at the 10+2 (Humanities) level across the
Bhubaneswar region from KVS Meghahataburu. He completed his Master’s degree in Economics
from AMU, Aligarh in 1992. Thereafter, he pursued in-depth study of Islamic economic thoughts.
During 1995–96, he taught Economics at Jamaitul Falah, Bilariyagunj, where his teaching inspired
several students to pursue higher studies and doctoral research in Economics.
From 1996 to 2010, he served AICMEU Ltd. Trust as Assistant Secretary General, gaining extensive
experience in community welfare, ethical finance, and socio-economic development. During this
period, he worked with AICMEU’s Baitulmaal Cooperative Credit Society Ltd. as a Board Member
(1996–2008) and later as General Manager (2008–2010), playing a key role in governance,
operations, and the strengthening of interest-free cooperative finance. He also served the Islamic
Development Bank (IDB), Jeddah, as Honorary Students’ Counsellor for India’s West Zone (2000–
2001), and served as Founder Secretary of Janseva Cooperative Credit Society Ltd., a multi-state
cooperative spread across 12 states. In 2010, to support micro-establishments, he initiated a
personal endeavor under the name of Economic Initiatives.
From 2011 to 2016, he worked as Consultant – Participatory Microfinance with the BASIX Social
Enterprise Group. After 2016, after extensive study of classical Tafasir, Seerat literature, and Islamic
history, he compiled 1,640 Qur’anic verses related to economics, ethics, and social justice. From
October 2018 to September 2019, he worked with the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation as Sadhavna
Associates, contributing to research and initiatives promoting social harmony. During the COVID-19
lockdown, he initiated a grocery trading enterprise to ensure essential supply continuity, later
handing it over to refocus on institutional work at Aasra.
He has authored over 200 articles and papers in English and Urdu, published across national and
international media. He contributed analytical inputs to the Justice Sachar Committee Report and
used to submit policy suggestions to the Planning Commission of India for framing five-year plans
aimed at reducing debt burdens and fiscal deficits. He also submitted comments on the CFSR Draft
Report, which were reflected in the Final Report submitted to the Prime Minister. He authored a
chapter titled “Alternative Finance Solutions to Promote Affordable Housing Finance in India” in the
Routledge volume Real Estate in South Asia (2019).
